Two birds sitting on a branch of a tree, green background

We’re enjoying the first full week of spring, along with a renewed burst of energy to dive back into long-forgotten outdoor activities, like cycling. Dusting off your bike, oiling the chain, and pumping the tires after the long, dreary months of winter can be just as satisfying as that first spring joyride itself.

Lately, the arrival of spring has been a hot topic in my lessons. Today, one of my students made an interesting observation: biking to work offers at least two major benefits. Not only does it help you get back in shape, but it also lets you avoid traffic jams. And that’s not even mentioning the pure joy of breathing in the fresh spring air and feeling the wind in your hair. We all nodded in agreement, and - being true to my nature - I couldn’t resist sneaking in an idiom: “You’re absolutely right! Riding a bike to work is a great way to kill two birds with one stone.

This is what I love about my job. Casual small talk, when students share bits of their daily lives, creates endless opportunities to enrich their language with meaningful, context-based idioms and expressions.

Speaking of today’s idiom, to kill two birds with one stone means achieving two goals with a single effort. Another great example? Installing solar panels on your roof. Not only do you cut down your electricity bills, but you also help protect the environment.

Now, over to you - can you think of a time when you’ve killed two birds with one stone? Share your examples in the comments!
